According to the New York Times, peaceful protests against the East German (DDR) regime had been happening since the 80s in Lutheran churches in what were known as "prayers for peace." In 1985, when Pastor Fuehrer posted a sign outside his church saying, "open for all," the movement really took off, as it was no longer a "Christian" movement, but a German one. Although the plan was simply to reform the government, the impact of these demonstrations was so powerful it toppled the East German regime and led to reunification with their West German brethren.
